Professor Whitney joins us from the School of Journalism at the University of Texas at Austin where he also held an appointment as professor of Radio-TV-Film. His Ph.D. is in mass communication and his research specialties are in the sociology of mass media communicators and in political communication and public opinion. Currently, Whitney is an Associate Principal Investigator for TESS (Time-Sharing Experiments for the Social Sciences, a national research consortium with $3.1 million in funding from the National Science Foundation) for large-scale Internet- and telephone-based social science experiments with U.S. general population samples. He is editor of a three-volume Encyclopedia of Journalism, scheduled for publication in 2006 by Sage Publications and is the author of more than 75 book chapters, journal articles, reports and papers.
