GRADUATE DESCRIPTION

Students enrolled in the Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Creative Writing & Writing for the Performing Arts graduate program are expected to complete a core of course work in one writing discipline selected from fiction, creative non-fiction, poetry, playwriting, screenwriting, and writing for interactive media. Students are also expected to participate in seminars and workshops where they will explore cross-genre writing and the theoretical underpinnings of creative writing. Upon entry, each student will be assigned an advisory committee which will provide advice about an appropriate course of study for that student, based on his/her undergraduate preparation and long term interests.

Requirements for Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Creative Writing & Writing for the Performing Arts

  • 4 workshop courses in genre of choice
  • 2 workshop courses in a cross-genre

In addition, students must complete the following:

  • 2 graduate-level literature courses from English or Comparative Literature (requirement can be met with upper-division courses in these areas along with the appropriate 292)
  • 3 graduate-level seminars from Theatre and/or Creative Writing
  • 1 course in literature in translation (upper-division or graduate level) from Hispanic Studies or Comparative Literature OR 1 additional cross-genre course
  • Thesis courses

Thesis and/or Dissertation

In the areas of playwriting, screenwriting, and writing for interactive media, the final project replaces the thesis or dissertation. In the areas of fiction, creative non-fiction, and poetry, students will be required to write a thesis of a novel, a short story collection, or a collection of poetry.

Program Summary

GRE EXAM NOT REQUIRED. Please note that admission into this program DOES NOT require the GRE exam. Applicants with a GPA below 3.20 are encouraged to take the GRE exam to help boost eligibility.

Other Requirements Applicants to the program should demonstrate significant professional skill by submitting work in manuscript form in one of the following genres; 10-15 pages of poetry, a maximum of 25 pages of fiction or nonfiction, or the first act or a maximum of 25 pages of a screenplay or play. Applicants must have a B.A. or B.S. degree from an accredited institution, and must submit a self-statement and a project proposal.
