ANNUAL AWARDS and GRANTS

The Program: The B.A. in Creative Writing offers a series of reading and workshop courses in the genres of fiction, nonfiction, playwriting, poetry and screenwriting. Poets, fiction writers and playwrights teach courses from a writer’s point of view. The writing courses are taught as workshops so that the subject matter is different each time the course is offered.

The Chancellor's Performance Award – Award: Up to $4,500.00

Open to new incoming freshmen/transfer students (must have already applied for full-time admission to the university). Only students enrolling as Creative Writing majors may receive this award.

Ina Coolbrith – Award: Up to $100.00

A system wide contest established by friends of the late Ina Coolbrith, former Poet Laureate of California for the best-unpublished poem or poems composed and submitted for this contest by an undergraduate student.

Poet Laureate – Award: Up to $100.00

A system wide contest established by the Ina Coolbrith circle through Mr. Fred E. Reed, University of California, Berkeley, class of 1903. This award, memorial to Ina Coolbrith, California’s first Poet Laureate, is open to all campuses of the University of California.

The William Henry Willis – Award: Up to $150.00

Annual poetry prize established in November 1997 by the family and friends of Mr. Willis. The $150.00 prize will honor a distinguished humorous or light verse poem written by an undergraduate major or non-major (work nominated by Creative Writing faculty).

Abraham L. Polonsky Award – Award: Up to $200.00

Best short fiction published in student literary magazine, MOSAIC (work nominated by Creative Writing faculty).

Roy T. Thompson Poetry Award – Award: Up to $150.00

Best poetry published in student literary magazine, MOSAIC (work nominated by Creative Writing faculty).

Birk Hinderaker Award – Award: Up to $150.00

Awarded for poetry from the literary magazine, MOSAIC (work nominated by Creative Writing Faculty).

No more than three entries per contest. Entries should be typewritten or computer generated, double spaced on standard 8.5 x 11 paper. Avoid unusual type size and style. It is recommended that duplicate copies be retained, as entries will not be returned. A cover sheet must be attached to each entry that should include:
